چکیده

Rinne, J.N., 1990. The utility of stream habitat and biota for identifying potential conflicting forest land uses: Montane riparian areas. For. Ecol. Manage., 33/34: 363-383. Investigations since 1960 on the effects of land-management practices on riparian-stream systems often have produced contradictory results. Inconsistencies have occurred, in part, because of efforts that have not been totally comprehensive and, in part, because of poor study design and procedure. This paper reviews the literature on the use of fine sediment, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and fishes as indicators for identifying and describing the effects of various land-use practices on riparian-stream systems. Also, I present the results of my research on the effects of land-management activities on these three variables for several southwestern (U.S.A.) montane streams. The integration of these two sources of information (literature and empirical data) suggests it is valid to use these three variables in detecting the effects of multiple use activities on riparian-stream systems, although other variables (e.g., solar radiation, water quality, water temperature, riparian vegetation) cannot be ignored. More valid and reliable definition of the effects of land-use practices on this valuable, everdeclining forestedwetland resource will require collection of baseline data, study over an extended time-period on an ecosystem basis, and consideration of multiple physical and biotic features.

Comparing Riparian and Catchment Influences on Stream Habitat in a Forested, Montane Landscape

—Multiscale analysis of relationships with landscape characteristics can help identify areas and physical processes that affect stream habitats, and thus suggest where and how land management is likely to influence these habitats. Such analysis is rare for mountainous areas where forestry is the primary land use. Consequently, we examined relationships in a forested, montane basin between strea...

Determining factor in habitat selection of Paracobitis iranica (Nalbant & Bianco 1998) population in Kordan River, Namak Lake Basin, Iran

Considering the fact that fish biodiversity conservation and land uses planning, require reliable information about fish distribution and habitat use patterns In order to describe species habitat properties, habitat use and habitat selectivity indices are applied. Relative frequency and environmental variables, depth, width, slope of river, altitude, velocity, substrate, Overstream canopy closu...

Rapid assessment of the riparian zone habitat of river

Some riparian areas of the country are in danger of deterioration due to uncontrolled exploitation coupled with loose implementation of environmental protection policies and regulations. Muleta River, a major watershed in Bukidnon, Philippines, was assessed to determine the present condition of its riparian habitat. Abiotic and biotic conditions of the river were assessed. Other factors includi...

Identifying linkages between land use, geomorphology, and aquatic habitat in a mixed-use watershed.

The potential impacts of land use on large woody debris (LWD) were examined in Sourdough Creek Watershed, a rapidly growing area encompassing Bozeman, Montana, USA. We identified six land classes within a 250 m buffer extending on either side of Sourdough Creek and assessed aquatic habitat and geomorphologic variables within each class. All LWD pieces were counted, and we examined 14 other vari...

The influence of connectivity in forest patches, and riparian vegetation width on stream macroinvertebrate fauna.

We assessed two dimensions of stream connectivity: longitudinal (between forest patches along the stream) and lateral (riparian vegetation), using macroinvertebrate assemblages as bioindicators. Sites representing different land-uses were sampled in a lowland basin that holds a mosaic of protected areas. Land-use analysis, forest successional stages and riparian zone widths were calculated by t...
